Myth #1: Before I started practicing Mysore Style Ashtanga yoga, I thought I had to memorize all of the poses before going to my first class.
Debunked: Well, that myth was quickly debunked when I was told that I could use a reference sheet provided by the yoga studio! So, that made it easier to practice since I did not need to focus so much on which pose followed the other. Rather, I was able to focus on how to connect my breath with the pose and my drishti (view or gaze)!
Once I learned the postures up to the position of what is called "Half Primary", I was able to flow freely from one pose to another, with a clearer sense of direction, depth and opening, pose after pose. I'm still progressing through my personal practice with the help of experienced teachers and I have learned to enjoy the journey (not focusing on any particular destination).
