Ahimsa, the first of the five yamas, is the practice of non-violence. It was probably the first yama I heard in my Yoga Basics class at Corpo Yoga Studio.
During the class the teacher would explain this concept in a simple enough way that made sense to me at the time.
More and more, I realized:
1. We also need to practice non-violence towards ourselves, as much as towards others.
2. We are often so harsh on ourselves, pushing ourselves to great heights of expectations, to the point of physical and emotional harm.
3. If we practice kindness, care, acceptance, tolerance and compassion towards ourselves, it is so much easier to practice these qualities towards others. This point was strengthened for me during a recent Yoga & Meditation workshop.
4. This is a beautiful first step to take in deepening a yoga lifestyle, on and off the mat.
