Brahmacharya (continence), the fourth of the five yamas, states that when we have control over our physical impulses of excess, we attain knowledge, vigor, and increased energy.
This yama is particularly difficult to follow, in a society that promotes excess, consumption, "keeping up with the Joneses", etc. The rise in obesity, and other societal excesses, are an outward sign of the struggle we face, as a society, to follow "continence". It's a constant struggle, of checking in with "the self" and figuring out how much do we need to eat, spend, waste, collect, consume, etc. The constant barrage of tempting "things" is hard to contend with. Having the inner courage and will to say "no" to the excesses is sometimes very challenging. Yet, we know that once we can achieve "continence", we can move closer to achieving the much sought-after balance and moderation, that frees up the energy we need to attain higher pursuits that will nourish us even more than the excesses.
