At first, setting an intention may seem strange, since it's dedicated to others (not to ourselves directly).
Then, after a while of setting an intention (on and off the mat) it's so awesome to notice that you recall your intention when faced with a challenging pose (on the mat) or a challenging situation (off the mat) in daily life. For example you might start to notice that, before speaking or acting, you will sometimes recall your intention and make a different decision (than if you had not recalled your intention). It's equally awesome to notice that the intentions that we dedicate to others, are then in turn beneficial to ourselves. It's helpful to make an intention daily as it makes the intention more easily "accessible" when "needed". Intentions are lovely tools to use daily to spread more positive vibes around us, and in turn within ourselves. It's like the sayings "you get what you give" or "what goes around, comes around".
