In some yoga poses, some teachers say "spread your toes", and although it might sound funny at first, I have found it to be one of the most useful tips on (and off) the mat.
By spreading our toes, we create a levity of action that boosts our balance, such as in warrior III.
It's amazing how much strength and balance can come from just spreading our toes. It's as if our legs are like wings of a bird or a plane, and our toes are like propellers or feathers, that allow us to "soar" or "fly".
